Call for Papers – ESA RN24 Midterm Conference

Technology in the Face of Global Challenges
26–27 November 2025, University of Porto

The RN24/SSTNET – Sociology of Science and Technology Network of the European Sociological Association invites researchers and scholars to submit sociological contributions that critically explore the role of technology in addressing global challenges, with a particular focus on the European context.

In an era marked by rapid technological change and global crises, this conference aims to stimulate critical reflection on the relationship between technological practices, imaginaries, and infrastructures, and the socio-political processes that influence their emergence and evolution.

Suggested topics

  • Technology, competitiveness and inequalities (digital divide, impacts of AI and automation, innovation and social stratification).
  • Policies, governance and regulation of emerging technologies (role of the EU, ethics, privacy, cybersecurity, citizen participation).
  • Technology and environmental sustainability (smart cities, green tech, circular economy, green and digital transition).
  • Technology and education (transformations in education systems, emerging skills, EDU TECH).

Key deadlines

  • Abstract submission (max 300 words in English): by 30 September 2025 to rn24.sstnet@gmail.com. Each author may submit only one abstract as first author and up to three as co-author.
  • Notification of acceptance: 6 October 2025
  • Registration: from 6 October to 7 November 2025
  • Conference: 26–27 November 2025
