From 26 to 28 November 2024, Cyprus became the centre of international collaboration with the Up2You Hackathon. Students, educators, civil society organisation (CSO) professionals, and stakeholders from six regions came together to co-create the Community Balance Scorecard (CBS), an innovative tool to measure and enhance community wellbeing.
What is the Community Balance Scorecard (CBS)?
The CBS is a framework designed to assess key aspects of community development, such as environmental sustainability, social cohesion, education, and economic growth. By leveraging concrete data and key performance indicators (KPIs), the CBS helps communities identify strengths, tackle challenges, and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting transparency and data-driven decision-making.
Hackathon Outcomes
The Hackathon was much more than a brainstorming session; it was a hands-on collaborative experience. Key achievements include:
Tailored KPIs: The creation of performance indicators to monitor progress in areas such as environmental health and social inclusion.
Innovative solutions: Proposals for simplified digital dashboards and participatory data collection tools to make the CBS accessible and adaptable to diverse technological contexts.
Local empowerment: The CBS emphasises direct community involvement, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Interdisciplinary collaboration: Strengthened connections between academia, CSOs, and local authorities to promote inclusive development.
The event concluded with a prototype of the CBS, serving as a foundation to support communities in building a sustainable and resilient future.
